B.R. Ravishankar (Ravi) is an independent consultant based in Ottawa, Canada. He currently works on various international projects with UNEP, as a Senior Project Advisor at UNEP’s Disasters and Conflicts Branch.
Ravi is a licensed professional engineer and has a master’s degree in environmental engineering. Ravi has over 30 years’ experience as an executive and program manager in Canada and around the world in the fields of environmental and safety management. Ravi is a former Director in the Canadian nuclear sector and has extensive experience in regulatory compliance and oversight of environmental protection programs. At one point, he was responsible for the regulatory oversight of up to 15 Class 1 nuclear facilities in Canada. Later, he was responsible for the safety and regulatory compliance of the Port Hope Area Initiative, which is a project on the clean-up of low-level radioactive waste spread around a small town in Canada. Ravi is specialized in environmental and safety management, with extensive experience in regulatory program management, project management, contaminated sites remediation management, radioactive and conventional waste management, occupational health & safety, and quality assurance programs.
Over the last 5 years, Ravi has worked exclusively with UNEP and has helped the Member States on ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction (Eco-DRR) program monitoring and evaluation; to incorporate environmental linkages in their COVID-19-related recovery needs assessments (CRNAs) and post-disaster needs assessments (PDNAs). During the recent pandemic-related restrictions, Ravi developed and delivered a series of remote training programs on COVID-19-related waste management. Ravi is the author of the disaster recovery framework guide for the environment sector, which is about to be published by UNDP.
Ravi has worked on projects in many countries including Nigeria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Uganda, Ethiopia, Cote d’Ivoire, India, and Haiti. Ravi is currently engaged in supporting HYPREP in Nigeria on the clean-up of hydrocarbon contamination sites in Ogoniland, located in the Niger Delta. Because of Ravi’s extensive technical and management background, Ravi has been helping out on a broad range of project topics - support and advice on their functions and organizational structure, their monitoring and evaluation function, general project progress and project management oversight, determination of appropriate remediation clean-up standards, etc.
