Canada at the World Humanitarian Summit:

Opportunities for leadership and legacy

Join us for a dynamic and thought-provoking discussion on today's global humanitarian challenges. Panelists will unpack the humanitarian space, highlight key concerns and challenges, make humanitarian policy and practice recommendations for the Canadian Government, and provide guidance on the World Humanitarian Summit (WHS) objectives.

In May 2016, the world will come together in Istanbul for the first ever World Humanitarian Summit. The timing could not be more appropriate. We live in a time of extreme human suffering. Armed conflicts and natural disasters have reached staggering levels.

Nearly 60 million people, half of them children, have been forced from their homes in recent years. We are in the midst of the greatest displacement crisis since the Second World War. Over 218 million people each year are affected by disasters, costing the global economy more than $300 billion annually.

Meanwhile, the global humanitarian system is overstretched and under-resourced. The United Nations has recently highlighted a US$15 billion gap in financing for humanitarian needs.

On May 23-24, world leaders, governments, humanitarian organizations and citizens will unite to tackle the world’s most urgent humanitarian crises and challenges. Canada will be there. What will we bring to the table? How can we best help the most vulnerable people around the world?

It is a Free Public Event; Register here.
