Job Title: Board Advisor/CEO Mentor
Location: Kampala, Uganda and home country
Timeframe: The anticipated commitment is 32 months in a series of missions over a 42 month period, beginning in early 2015.
Salary: Commensurate with experience and in-line with CCA standards.
General Description: The Canadian Co-operative Association (CCA) is seeking expressions of interest from seasoned professionals with business turn around experience and managing a credit union or savings and credit co-operative apex organization to advise the Board of Directors and mentor the CEO of the Uganda Co-operative Savings and Credit Union Ltd.
Responsible to: CCA Africa Region Director
Oversight responsibility: Up to 9 part-time Short Term Technical Advisors
Detailed Responsibilities:
On behalf of CCA, the Board Advisor, CEO Mentor will:
A) Provide High Level Advice to an elected Board of Directors
- Assist the Board to define its role relative to management and advise the Board on matters related to that role.
- Provide technical assistance and advice to the Board in articulating its value proposition in light of other service providers in the sector, developing and achieving its strategic plan, developing a member engagement strategy.
B) Mentorship
- Mentor the CEO in a variety of areas, including: managing cultural change, developing internal policies and improving compliance of policies, building a strong management team to deliver on the value proposition, managing costs, improving operational and financial efficiency, marketing and business development, enterprise risk management, reviewing core services, building strong relationships with members, engaging with government, other apex organizations and external stakeholders.
C) Act as Team Leader
- Provide leadership to Short Term Technical Advisors (STA).
- Identify specialized technical assistance needs and requirements in consultation with Board and management.
- Recruit and select STAs. It is anticipated that STAs will be recruited for up to 9 disciplines for periods of 30 to 90 days. One STA may address more than one discipline.
- Coordinate activities of STAs submitting progress reports and recommendations to CCA, funding agency and the Project Monitoring Unit of the Government of Uganda.
Qualifications:
(I) Education/Experience
- Master’s or other advanced degree in business, finance or related discipline
- Mid to senior level experience and a proven track record in co-operative business and/or institutional turnarounds
- Minimum 15 years of work experience, including 5 years in hands on senior management of a large co-operative organization
(II) Skills/Knowledge
- Demonstrated capacity to provide effective advice without being in a direct decision-making position
- Demonstrated capacity to relate to people of different backgrounds and skills
- Strong commitment to organizational success
- Demonstrated ability to inspire others to commit to common goals
- Strong organizational, strategic planning and financial analysis skills
- Effective oral and written, cross cultural and technical communications
- High level financial and risk management, negotiation and partnering skills, in particular working as part of a co-operative organisation
- Proven analytical skills and ability to think strategically
(III) Assets
- Experience living and/or working in sub-Saharan African, in particular Uganda
- Experience living and/or working in high-risk environments
- Fluency in both written and spoken English
Working Conditions:
