Location: Lima, Peru

The Artisanal Gold Council is seeking a senior individual, based in Lima, to serve as Project Director to lead its Government of Canada-supported ASGM development project in Peru.  The Project Director is responsible for the successful leadership and management of the project in accordance with the Project Implementation Plan.  The Project Director will utilize the resources of local partners, staff expertise from the AGC team in Victoria, and guidance from senior AGC management in the conduct of his/her duties.

The Project Director must have extensive experience and expertise in the following areas:

  • Leadership of assigned and related staff in accordance with the general mission of the AGC and the specific mandated outcomes of the project
  • Management of the project including coordination to ensure adherence to project schedule, budget and standards
  • Results based management addressing sustainability
  • Production of a significant level of project financial, administrative and operational reporting
  • Familiarity with the specific requirements of the Government of Canada’s Results Based Management approach
  • Strong abilities to monitor, control and report on project budget, expenses and cash and financial management

Technical

  • Demonstrated experience in community development, preferably in ASGM areas, and an understanding of the challenges and factors in improvements in the sector
  • Demonstrated experience in ASGM projects and best practices, in Peru or elsewhere, particularly as related to technical outcomes, policy and governance, and responsible market supply chains
  • Demonstrated understanding of environmental implications and considerations in ASGM, particularly in processing of ore to extract gold, and factors related to the use of mercury and cyanide

Governance

  • Understanding and comprehension of the roles, responsibilities and relationships between the various levels of government in Peru, particularly in the Ministry of Mines and the Ministry of the Environment
  • Experience working with senior and project level personnel at levels commensurate with those at the Canadian Embassy in Lima
  • Experience working with Peruvian government level personnel up to the Ministerial level, and ability to clearly and concisely communicate on aspects related to the project

Gender

  • Understanding and comprehension of problems associated with and solutions in support of gender equality and employment as related to the ASGM sector

Business and Financial Sector

  • Demonstrated understanding of the economics of gold production
  • Demonstrated understanding of gold trade, in particular mine to market initiatives
  • Demonstrated understanding of characteristics of responsible, artisanal gold, particularly as related to OECD and LBMA standards

Development Project

  • Experience working with a government funded, development project targeting sector improvement in one of the areas this project is addressing, such as environmental, gender or legislative/formalization frameworks

Stakeholder relations

  • Communicate with stakeholders to keep them informed of the project and to identify changes in the project areas served by the project
  • Establish good working relationships and collaborative arrangements with the Government of Peru, community groups, funders, and other organizations to help achieve the goals of the project.
  • Conduct official correspondence on behalf of the project as appropriate
  • Represent the project at relevant meetings, workshops, community activities to enhance the project's profile.
