POSITION SUMMARY

The Project Accountant undertakes the following main categories of work: Set up and maintenance of project specific accounts in accounting system; preparation of project reports and schedules; assistance with the development of overseas projects including review of proposals and contracts; assistance with the overall financial management of the organization; provide financial technical assistance to partner organizations and CHF field offices; liaison with corporate and project auditors and donors; and conduct project Monitoring and Evaluation as well as Capacity Building field visits.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Set up and maintain financial records for various projects ensuring adequate audit trail and supporting data are in place and assist in the development of overseas projects and CHF’s accounting and financial policies.
  • Research, compile and prepare budget and work plan figures for proposals and existing projects within project teams.
  • Analyze financial reports (including some invoices) and staff travel claims to ensure compliance with CHF, Government of Canada (if applicable), donor policies and contracts' terms.
  • Ensure Field reports, other incoming reports, invoices and requests for advances are accurate and complete; record disbursements of the financial reports (currency conversion where necessary) and follow up on overseas transfers.
  • Prepare project financial reports and other reports, as required -- reconcile same with accounting system.
  • Participate in monitoring and evaluation/capacity building Field visits and report thereon.
  • Provide ongoing, consistent support and capacity building on financial matters to CHF HQ and Field Offices and Local Partners Finance staff.
  • Review complex partner contracts, contribution agreements and sub-contractor agreements.
  • Participate in preparations and support for the CHF annual audit and project audits.
  • Assist with the closing of projects.
  • Filing of financial project documents.
  • Participate in project, staff meetings and other ad hoc committees.
  • Engage in professional development annually.
  • Other relevant duties as assigned, including backup for SAGE 300 (ACCPAC) data entry.

REQUISITE QUALIFICATIONS & KSAs

EDUCATION

Professional Accounting designation or Bachelor of Commerce degree or equivalent with a specialization in Finance/Accounting, and relevant work experience.

EXPERIENCE

  • Preference given to candidates with 5 years related experience on DFATD (CIDA) projects.
  • Travel experience in a developing country is an asset.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs)

Knowledge of:

  • International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS);
  • Financial management;
  • International development;
  • Sensitivity to financial management practices in international offices;
  • Project management;
  • Computer accounting packages, spreadsheet and word processing packages;
  • Government of Canada travel directives;
  • DFATD guidelines and handbooks;
  • Researching for donor requirements.

Abilities:

  • High level of proficiency with SAGE 300 (ACCPAC) and MS Excel;
  • Ability to plan and prioritize work;
  • Ability to work under pressure;
