Executive Director

Brief Description

WaterCan is a leading Canadian charity dedicated to fighting global poverty.  Since 1987, WaterCan’s Mission is to support and strengthen the capacities of partner organizations and communities to develop sustainable solutions that address local drinking water, sanitation and hygiene education needs.  Our programs have reached over 1.2 million children, women and men in the world’s poorest regions, helping to break the cycle of poverty and disease and increasing opportunities for health, education, gender equality, and economic growth.  Working in partnership with organizations in eastern Africa, WaterCan supports small scale, community driven projects that are long term, sustainable development initiatives using low-cost, locally appropriate technologies that integrate water supply, sanitation and hygiene education activities.  We put emphasis on community ownership of planning and management, reinforcing self-help and participation.

In a world of continuing change, WaterCan attaches great importance to making the Canadian public aware of worldwide water and sanitation issues. This effort helps to ensure that provision of clean water and sanitation services to the world’s poor remains an important priority for Canadians and other members of the international community.

WaterCan is looking for an Executive Director

Reporting to an engaged Board of Directors through the Board Chair, the Executive Director will work with the Board to ensure WaterCan continues to deliver its programs and services within its strategic mandate.   Your role will be driving excellence and providing strategic and operational leadership to the existing WaterCan team, while concurrently leading a new international partnership that is near fruition.  This initiative will greatly expand our international presence.  Responsibilities will include all aspects of fundraising, financial stewardship, change management, organizational and program design, as well as maintaining and creating key relationships with stakeholders, donors and media.  The ongoing and systematic development of these strategic partnerships will help strengthen and broaden the ability to execute and deliver WaterCan's organizational and humanitarian objectives.  Ensuring effective ongoing communication with the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and other donors, NGO's, Canadian and international institutions is critically important.

The successful candidate will have considerable background and experience in the design and management of international development proposals, programs and partnerships.  Ideally, you will have led organizations and built alliances with both domestic and international partners.  As a seasoned manager and leader of teams, you encourage and embody innovation, creativity, accountability and decisiveness.  Experience and familiarity with government and institutional donors and partners, as well as experience creating and implementing fundraising campaigns and programs will be ideal.  You have a track record of results and superior relationship building, and are an adept and compelling communicator.  We invite you to visit WaterCan's website at www.watercan.com .
