DIRECTOR, INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The Canadian Bar Association (CBA) is a professional organization formed in 1896, and incorporated by a Special Act of Parliament in 1921. The Association represents over 35,000 lawyers, judges, notaries, law teachers, and law students from across Canada.  It is the essential ally, advocate and voice of all members of the legal profession. The CBA is a leading edge organization committed to enhancing the professional and commercial interests of a diverse membership and to protecting the independence of the judiciary and the Bar.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Director, International Development is responsible for the CBA’s international development program including submitting bids for projects that are posted by international aid agencies, seeking out international development projects, administering these projects including supervising budgets and staff both in Canada and internationally.  The ultimate goal is to have the CBA continue to contribute effectively to international development through the promotion of the rule of law and strengthening of legal institutions and new emerging democracies around the world.

The optimal candidates will possess a law degree and preferably the ability to communicate effectively in both of Canada’s official languages.  Strong financial acumen in managing multiple budgets concurrently, forecasting, analysis and reporting, excellent human resource and people management experience and a track record of successfully dealing with aid agencies and partner organizations internationally are required elements of the successful candidate.  The Director will work with volunteers, committees and staff to develop and deliver programs that are implemented on a contract basis in a respectful, collaborative manner in multiple countries and locations.  Excellent verbal and writing skills will be essential in effectively representing the Canadian Bar Association with senior government officials and private sector leaders around the world.
