Nature and Scope:

World University Service of Canada (WUSC) is seeking resumes of qualified professionals for an upcoming Education Project bid in Malawi. The availability of these positions is contingent on the award of these bids.

The project will provide technical assistance to facilitate the revision of the mathematics curriculum for lower primary (standards 1-4), develop corresponding teaching and learning materials, design teacher training strategies (including school-based support structures), rigorously pilot the new materials and training strategies, document impact, refine the materials and training strategies, and then oversee the national scale-up.

Positions available:

1-  Deputy Team Leader:

A Deputy Team Leader with demonstrable expertise managing and delivering education reform - preferably related to curriculum reform - through technical assistance in Malawi or similar low resource settings in sub- Saharan Africa. The Deputy Team Leader will support the Team Leader to manage the whole technical assistance engagement and overseeing the curriculum reform process within the Government. The individual will need experience in the following:

• Demonstrable expertise providing technical assistance to drive through national reforms, in environments without sector budget support, and aware of the challenges in the local political economy;
• Effectively managing pilots and taking the learnings to scale;
• Excellent communication skills, translating technical content for non-technical experts,
• Capacity building without undermining existing government structures
• Strong leadership skills to ensure the programme delivers on time and high quality.

2- Mathematics curriculum/teaching expert/s

A small team of mathematics experts will support, and quality assure the maths curriculum revision and development of teaching and learning materials for standards 1-4. Expected skills include:

• Mathematics curriculum development expertise for lower primary school in Malawi or similar, low-resource settings;
• Expertise in providing capacity building support without creating parallel systems
• Expertise in testing, piloting and finalising teaching and learning materials.
• Expertise in gender inclusion and special needs curriculum preferable.

3- Teacher Training Expert(s)

A small team of experts with demonstrable expertise developing effective teacher training approaches and support mechanisms that have worked at scale to effectively change classroom practice. Expected skills:

• Expertise in developing teacher training strategies (especially in school approaches) from Malawi or similar low-resource settings;
• Expertise developing training materials for teachers
• Expertise piloting, monitoring teacher training approaches
• Expertise providing technical assistance through capacity building
• Expertise in gender inclusion and special needs training preferable.
