Jackson Family Scholarship in Community Engagement at Carleton University

We’re pleased to update you on the progress of the Jackson Family Scholarship in Community Engagement at Carleton University.  The news is very good!

Announcing the 2023 Jackson Family Scholar. We’re excited to let you know that Sarah Thatcher of Huntsville, Ontario is the 2023 Jackson Family Scholar. 

An experienced non-profit professional and community advocate whose priority is the well-being of children, Sarah is a student in the Master of Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership program at Carleton’s School of Public Policy and Administration. https://carleton.ca/mpnl/2023/sarah-thatcher-student/

Her community project is important to the Muskoka region.  Our award supports Sarah’s initiative to launch a charity, Food4Kids, to address food insecurity among children of working families in tourism-dependent Muskoka, where local housing and other costs have risen to alarming levels. 

Already running a weekend healthy breakfast program in Huntsville for nearly 40 children, the organization recently held a successful fundraising event that attracted many businesses and individuals. Food4Kids is off to an excellent start!

The Scholarship is achieving its objectives. Previous Jackson Family Scholars, you may recall, were Emma Wood (2021) who worked on community food security, and Katelyn James (2022), who focused on staff well-being in social service non-profits, both in the Peterborough, Ontario area.  

With their deep commitment to community, justice, and learning, all three awardees exemplify the purpose of our scholarship.  We are proud to support their important work and look forward to doing the same for future scholars.

We continue to grow the endowment.  We intend that the Jackson Family Scholarship in Community Engagement will provide financial support to such emerging non-profit leaders in perpetuity.  At the same time, we also want to ensure that our award is responsive to the rising costs faced by graduate students themselves as they build their skills and knowledge.

So, we continue to fundraise for the endowment of the scholarship.  Even though many of you have already contributed, for which we are deeply grateful, we could use your help again. And for those who have not yet supported the award, we invite you to consider doing so.

Giving Tuesday is coming very soon, on Tuesday, November 28! As with other years, Carleton University will match any donation to our scholarship on a 1 to 1 basis—if you make your contribution within the 24-hour period of November 28, beginning at 12:01 am and running through to 11:59 pm that day. The earlier you make your donation in that period, the better.
