For data to protect the rights of the most vulnerable and provide for their needs, it must count and include those who are often left behind. IDRC’s Solutions for Gender Equality speaker series continues with a panel that will highlight examples of how reliable, sex-disaggregated data can benefit women and girls globally by making policies and programs more relevant to them.
The speakers at "Who counts, who matters?" will present innovations and approaches that their organizations have used to address gender data gaps and make sure data benefits the very people who provide it. They will discuss structural barriers that can render women invisible when data is generated, used and interpreted.
Our expert panel of researchers and activists consists of:
- Shaida Badiee, Managing Director, Open Data Watch, United States
- Silvana Fumega, Research and Policy Director, Latin American Initiative for Open Data, Uruguay
- Sohana Shafique, Assistant Scientist and Deputy Program Coordinator, Health Systems and Population Studies Division, International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh
Margaret Biggs, Chairperson of the IDRC Board of Governors, will moderate the panel.
The Solutions for Gender Equality speaker series is inspired by Women Deliver 2019 — the world’s largest conference on gender equality — which will take place in Vancouver from June 3 to 6, 2019. The speaker series focuses on the conference theme of power and how it can drive or hinder progress and change.
