Governance and the Rule of Law

Governance and the Rule of Law are the topic of this year's World Development Report and the upcoming CAIDP-CCIL conference. Two recent articles explore different aspects of the links with development:

The first, on the Rule of Law in Africa https://www.economist.com/news/middle-east-and-africa/21724390-challenge... talks about both the challenges to establishing the rule of law and the negative impact the lack of it can have on investment and the creation of employment.

The second, about the role of international assistance in the recovery and development of Liberia https://www.economist.com/news/international/21724383-it-also-weakened-c... explores how aid can undermine the development of government institutions.

Two aspects of this complex topic.

Another interesting article which discusses recent research showing that conflict between groups increases during times of economic stress -- crop failures due to climate change events for example; and that the damage caused can be mitigated by strong political institutions: https://www.economist.com/news/finance-and-economics/21725593-historically-there-were-more-anti-semitic-attacks-when-crops-failed-link
