IISD survey to identify ICT's transformative role in adapting to Climate Change

The World Bank Group and the African Development Bank, with the support of the African Union (“the partners”), are exploring the transformative potential of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs), especially mobile phones, in addressing the major economic, environmental and social challenges facing the African continent today.  It has chosen to take a sectoral approach to this endeavour, with a view to preparing a flagship report under the “Transformation Ready” theme.  The key sectors identified for inclusion in the study are agriculture, climate change adaptation, education, energy/clean technology, financial services, health and the delivery of public services. The contributions of ICTs to regional trade and integration, and to the local ICT sector are two additional cross-cutting studies that the flagship report will cover.

 

The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) was commissioned by the partners to undertake this study that seeks to identify ICTs transformative role in adapting to Climate Change. An online survey has been designed to help the research identify one or a number of tools with the greatest potential for significant impact among many ICTs. It would also focus on the barriers, opportunities, and challenges to be overcome in their successful scale-up. The survey can be found at:
