Welcome to the 2024 Conference!

Development Cooperation in a Time of Geopolitical Instability

Ottawa - February 20-22, 2024

The Canadian Association of International Development Professionals (CAIDP) in partnership with the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs (NPSIA) is pleased to announce a conference on "Development Cooperation in a Time of Geopolitical Instability”, to be held at Carleton University on February 20-22, 2024.

We are witnessing the emergence of a multipolar world with competing and often divergent interests, a rise in geopolitical destabilization and conflict, the erosion of democracy, human rights, and rule of law, and a rise in violence against women, journalists, and aid workers. This is within the ongoing efforts to address gaps in health systems, assist countries in conflict, decarbonize the economy, address climate change, and address trade and migrant flows. In addition, development professionals have to adapt to shifts in funding levels and mechanisms and localization of human resources.

The conference will involve  Global Affairs Canada policy makers in a discussion of a GAC transformation as well as engage politicians, civil society organizations and academia in provocative discussions regarding current issues of relevance to  international development including: inclusive governance in international development; changes to  development policies and priorities; removing  systemic barriers to development;  enhancing  partnerships, and inclusivity; and practical issues like localization facing the Canadian international development community. CAIDP needs to develop a strategy to support and enable its members to understand and adapt to these changes.

The conference is open to all interested in global development concerns, especially students and young professionals. Plenary sessions will be available virtually for those who cannot attend in person and will be made available on CAIDP’s social media channels.
