Financial Management for NGOs - IDI. 201 This course provides participants with the financial management and accounting skills NGOs need to maintain project accounts, financial records and budget control. Once these basic skills are learned, participants are then taught how to prepare annual and project budgets, tender and procure in the NGO context, and report against the financial requirements of donors. February 19 - February 23, 2008, 8:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. Registration Deadline: February 15, 2008 Issues and Tools in International Development - IDI. 100 This course provides participants with an overview of the key development paradigms, theories and models needed to understand and assess the critical issues from a project manager's perspective. These issues include gender, environment, human rights, food security, health and livelihood. Participants are introduced to the respective roles of NGOs and governments as key actors in international development, with a Canadian focus on understanding CIDA's Policy on Meeting Basic Human Needs. This is a core course in the International Development Management Studies Certificate. May 12 - May 16, 2008, 8:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. Registration Deadline: May 9, 2008 Management of Humanitarian Assistance - IDI. 101 Learn the key management skills essential for humanitarian assistance projects. Understand the causes of disasters, early warning systems, and aid assessment with a focus on the specific skills needed to manage humanitarian assistance, including setting up country offices and related agreements; food aid, planning and providing for emergency services (shelter, food, health care), project planning, monitoring and evaluation, and transportation, warehousing and distribution of procured goods. This is a core course in the International Development Management Studies Certificate. May 26 - May 30, 2008, 8:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. Registration Deadline: May 23, 2008 Humanitarian Logistics and Food Aid Management - IDI. 203 This course is intended to provide an overview of the humanitarian logistics chain and then an in-depth understanding of each component. Participants will gain the skills and tools necessary to manage the supply chain. In addition, participants will have an understanding of how to manage the food aid pipeline. June 2 - June 6, 2008, 8:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. Registration Deadline: May 30, 2008 Project Design and Proposal Writing - IDI. 103 This course allows participants to develop the skills and gain the knowledge required to assess community needs, conceptualize directed programs, and appreciate the importance of stakeholder participation. Participants can then incorporate these skills into the project cycle. The course begins with an overview of project cycle management and introduces such concepts as needs assessment, feasibility studies, and proposal writing. Participants learn about donor requirements, including those of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the Australian Aid Agency (AUSAid), and the European Union (EU). Participants work with tools such as Results Based Management (RBM) and Logical Frame Analysis (LFA), with a focus on the development of performance indicators and monitoring and evaluation systems. This is a core course in the International Development Management Studies Certificate.
